Captivating art installation focused on conservation takes its place at Sepilok

An extraordinary and thought-provoking sculpture has taken up permanent residence at Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre.

During Orangutan Caring Week 2023, we revealed a captivating and thought-provoking piece of art. It stands as a powerful symbol, aiming to draw attention to the profound impact of plastic pollution on orangutans and their rainforest home.

Fashioned entirely from litter collected in and around Sandakan, this incredible sculpture was brought to life by our chairperson and artist, Jacha Potgieter.

The collection of waste was a collaborative effort, involving members of our team and the Wildlife Rescue Unit, which included a clean up of an area of the local beach.

Now this incredible creation finds its rightful place on display at Sepilok, housed safely inside the outdoor nursery building. Serving as a poignant reminder of the urgent need to combat plastic pollution.

It stands as a beacon of hope, inspiring action and awareness for the conservation of these magnificent creatures and their natural habitat.
